The City of Whiteville has openings for paid-on-call (POC) Firefighter positions.  POC Firefighters respond to emergency fire and medical related situations; participate in fire suppression and rescue; maintain equipment and facilities; and continue training and instruction.  Duties include, but are not limited to:  extinguishment of fires, salvaging structures, responding to vehicle accidents, and rescue operations, and other duties as assigned.  Monthly and annual training requirements must be met.  is seeking to fill the position of Fire Engineer.  Work may be often performed under stressful and emergency conditions and frequently involves personal hazards.  Employees are subject to hazards associated with firefighting including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as exposure to high heat, exposure to chemical, and in the proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working in high places.  Employees may also be exposed to atmospheric conditions and is subject to the OSHA requirement on bloodborne pathogens, and are sometimes required to wear a respirator, and may be required to work in close quarters.

This person must possess a valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver’s license.  A graduate from high school or GED equivalent.   Applicants must be able to pass the Candidate Physical Agility test (CPAT.  Possess or be able to obtain NC Firefighter II Certification within 18 months of date of hire.  Possess or be able to obtain Medical Responder or higher certification within 24 months of date of hire.
