Employees in this position may serve as paid part-time personnel and/or in a paid on-call status. Performs firefighting duties and conduct fire inspections; also performs related duties to suppression and prevention of fires; rescue victims, medical emergencies, operates and maintains all department equipment and station facilities; participates in ongoing training programs; works under close supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Employees serving as part-time Firefighters in this classification are responsible for maintaining and operating firefighting equipment while fighting fires and performing general firefighting duties which frequently involve hazardous conditions and extreme weather conditions. Work standards and procedures are well established and understood by employees in this classification; however, considerable independence and judgment are required of the employees during an incident. Employees are subject to hazards associated with firefighting including working in both inside and outside environments, to include but not limited to extreme cold weather, exposure to various hazards such as high heat, chemicals, and in proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and working in high places. Employees are also exposed to atmospheric conditions and are subject to OSHA requirements regarding bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials and are required to wear a respirator or air pack and may be required to work in close quarters. Work is reviewed by the fire scene commander as well as the Fire Captain through observation and discussions concerning the quality and effectiveness of fire and rescue efforts and through evaluation of completion of training activities.
Desirable Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent, NC Firefighter Level I Certification or some experience as a Firefighter; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Special Requirement:
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class driver’s license.
- Paid on Call is not subjected to Driver’s History
- Willingness to obtain level of certification required by the Fire Department.
POC Prohibitions:
- Employees are prohibited from driving any City Fire Vehicles
- Employees are prohibiting using of any firefighting apparatus.
